Our Covenant

In order to be the people God is calling us to be,

we, individually and corporately, commit ourselves to the following ideals.

  1. I.   Coming into the Lord’s Presence

1.    I will give my life to Jesus every day.

I want to be set apart for God (Matthew 22:37). I want to be a disciple of Christ (Luke 6:40)

2.    I will pray every day.

I will spend time every day worshipping the Lord. I will read the Scripture every day (2 Timothy 3:16). I will attend the gatherings of the community. (Hebrews 10:25).

II.        Living a Life of Honor

3.    I will live in the light.

I want to live in the light of Christ. I will not hide things or live in darkness (John 9:5). I will keep the commandments (Matthew 19:17). I will examine my conscience every day and repent for my sins (2 Corinthians 13:5). I will not live in serious sin (1 John 5:16-17).

4.    I will seek to grow in holiness and ongoing conversion.

I want to be holy as my heavenly Father is holy (Matthew 5:48). I will, with the help of the Holy Spirit, win the battle for my mind—and put on the new self (Ephesians 4:22-24).

5.    I will honor and support my brothers and sisters.

I will do my best to love, uphold, inspire, and pray for my brothers and sisters in the community (John 13:34). I will live in unity with them (Psalm 133). I will not hold unforgiveness in my heart  (Matthew 6:14-15). I will not gossip about, undermine, or manipulate my brothers and sisters.

6.    I will study and learn and form my mind.

I will study and learn the Scriptures, the teachings of my church, and the teachings of the community (Ezra 7:10; Acts 2:42).

7.    I will accept those things that makes our life together possible.

I will respect and support the order of our life together, and I will support the life of the community with my time, my energy, and my material and financial resources.

III.    Changing my Environment

8.    I want to be part of a community on mission.

I commit myself to the work of evangelization and to serving the Lord, his church, and his people in and through the community (Mark 16:15). I will commit myself to serving and caring for those in need (Matthew 25:31-46).

9.    I will work for Christian Unity.

I will participate actively in my church while respecting all other Christian traditions and denominations (Mark 9:40). I will uphold the truths of the gospel as presented in the Nicene Creed and the Apostles Creed.

We recognize that by virtue of our membership in the Jacksonville Community we are also members

of The Sword of the Spirit, an international community of communities. We commit ourselves to

love and support our brothers and sisters in The Sword of the Spirit throughout the world,

and to serve with them in a common mission.

We desire to put our lives into his hands completely and to follow him as a people wherever he may lead.
